Obscure Match of the Week: Bryan Danielson vs Kamala

20 October 2026 · 2 min read · by the Wrestl team

In the history of independent professional wrestling, few title reigns match the prestige and work-rate of Bryan Danielson’s iconic run as Ring of Honor World Champion from 2005 to 2006. During this legendary 462-day reign, "The American Dragon" built his reputation as the undisputed best wrestler in the world through technical masterclasses and physical marathons against prodigies like Roderick Strong, Nigel McGuinness, and KENTA. Yet, tucked into the autumn of 2006—just two weeks after his acclaimed 33-minute epic against KENTA at Glory By Honor V—Danielson defended the title against an opponent lifted straight from a 1980s WWF fever dream: "The Ugandan Giant" Kamala.

Taking place on September 30, 2006, at a joint Liberty States Wrestling and ROH event in Bridgeport, Connecticut, the match remains one of the most absurd and entertaining anomalies in independent wrestling history. By 2006, Ring of Honor had established itself as the home of work-rate purists, where the world championship was defined by mat wrestling, stiff strikes, and athletic endurance. Kamala, meanwhile, was a 56-year-old veteran whose prime featured Hulk Hogan and The Undertaker. The collision was orchestrated through an ongoing storyline involving Prince Nana’s Embassy faction, who brought in the monster as a mercenary to dethrone Danielson. To stack the deck even further, Prince Nana appointed himself special guest referee, while Kim Chee prowled ringside.

The visual contrast inside the high school gymnasium set the tone immediately: the serious, technical champion standing across from a face-painted, wild-eyed veteran weighing nearly 375 pounds. What makes the bout legendary among tape-traders and fans is not its work-rate—which was intentionally basic—but Danielson's ability to work around Kamala’s physical limitations. Rather than breaking character or treating the match as a joke, Danielson approached the challenge with deadpan seriousness. He bumped, sold, and hesitated as if genuinely terrified of Kamala’s size and erratic nature.

The opening minutes featured Danielson cautiously circling the veteran, attempting basic waistlocks only to be hurled across the ring by raw power. Danielson turned simple chops and slams into dramatic, exaggerated bumps, selling the impact as if hit by a train. Recognizing that a traditional wrestling match in the ring was limited, Danielson eventually took the action out into the gymnasium crowd, brawling around chairs and bleachers to keep the audience invested.

The bout ultimately descended into chaos. After a physical brawl on the outside, interference from Kim Chee and bias from Prince Nana in the referee stripes led to a cheap disqualification finish. The decision protected the legacy of the veteran monster while allowing Danielson to escape with his ROH World Championship intact. While it never anchored a primary ROH pay-per-view DVD, footage eventually circulated online years later, earning cult status among wrestling fans. The encounter stands as a testament to Bryan Danielson’s versatility, proving that a true master of the craft could step into a high school gym, wrestle a 56-year-old character worker, and turn an obvious mismatch into a memorable piece of professional wrestling art.
